However, plagiarism is a problem that goes far beyond the academic world and may be spotted in media, cinema, <a href=\"https:\/\/plagiarismcheck.org\/blog\/the-10-most-famous-plagiarized-songs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">music<\/a>, and even business.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"infographic\">\n<li class=\"num\" data-num=\"1\">\n<h4 style=\"line-height: 28px;\">Academic classics<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>A case of nearly classic academic indecency was found in regard to an influential cancer researcher, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/14\/health\/welch-plagiarism-cancer-dartmouth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr. H. Gilbert Welch<\/a>. The investigation of his work took two years to conclude that Welch used a plagiarized graph in the paper he published in a reputable scholarly journal. This case unravelled into a scandal and made Welch resign from Dartmouth College, for the plagiarism in his paper undermined not only his own reputation, but the credibility of the very journal he published his work in.<\/li>\n<li class=\"num\" data-num=\"2\">\n<h4 style=\"line-height: 28px;\">Unscrupulous journalism<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>A reputable newspaper reporter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/north-carolina\/articles\/2018-07-20\/the-latest-reporters-lawyer-responds-to-plagiarism-probe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anne Blythe<\/a>, was accused of plagiarism. The journalist failed to credit the sources and the characters of her stories. Furthermore, the investigation of a single case of Blythe\u2019s plagiarism revealed the same indecency in her previous work. The author quoted phrases or full passages from third-party sources with no credit or reference to the source, which resulted in her losing her job.<\/li>\n<li class=\"num\" data-num=\"3\">\n<h4 style=\"line-height: 28px;\">The case with the Oscars<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>The best-known creative plagiarism allegation opened the year 2018 right before the Academy Awards ceremony. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2018\/02\/guillermo-del-toro-defends-shape-of-water-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Guillermo del Toro<\/a>, the director of one of that year\u2019s most nominated and discussed film, <em>The Shape of Water<\/em>, was accused of plagiarizing the plot of the film from the play <em>Let Me Hear You Whisper<\/em> by Paul Zindel. Despite the similarity of the events in the pieces, the director denied any resemblance with Zindel\u2019s work. Remarkably, the plagiarism scandal before the Oscars did not undermine del Toro chances in taking the main Academy Award.<\/li>\n<li class=\"num\" data-num=\"4\">\n<h4 style=\"line-height: 28px;\">Musical quote<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>The most horrendous case of musical plagiarism in 2018 was attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/ed-sheeran-plagiarism-tim-mcgraw-faith-hill-jasmine-rae-song-a8161566.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ed Sheeran<\/a> for a country song that he co-wrote for US country musicians. His music for <em>The Rest of Our Life<\/em> turned out to be nearly an exact match with the work <em>When I Found You<\/em> performed by Jasmine Rae. Although Sheeran did not perform the song, he got plagiarism allegations for claiming its authorship.<\/li>\n<li class=\"num\" data-num=\"5\">\n<h4 style=\"line-height: 28px;\">Innovation plagiarism<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>One of the most prominent examples here is the blockchain project <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinexchangeguide.com\/trons-big-day-spoiled-by-trx-codebase-blockchain-plagiarized-code-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>TRON<\/em><\/a>. According to the experts\u2019 investigation, <em>TRON\u2019s<\/em> white paper contained borrowings from the white papers by <em>IPFSbot <\/em>and <em>Filecoin <\/em>projects concerning the algorithms of user identification. Even though the scandal was not resolved officially, it seriously damaged the rate of TRON\u2019s cryptocurrency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Negative Impact of Plagiarism on Academic Progress<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes\u00a0plagiarism effects\u00a0are instant; sometimes they fire back in years, like a long-range boomerang.\u00a0Within the past decade, there were multiple cases when\u00a0academic misconduct\u00a0spoiled students\u2019 lives or even ruined the careers of famous people.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The \u201cCopygate\u201d scandal<\/strong>\u00a0with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2011\/mar\/01\/german-defence-minister-resigns-plagiarism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">German defense minister Guttenberg cost him a position<\/a>. Bayreuth University revoked his Ph.D. degree after non-original content was found in his doctoral thesis. At that time, Guttenberg was a promising politician, popular among the German people \u2014 some even called him a successor to Angela Merkel. And the\u00a0plagiarism consequences\u00a0deprived him of both his reputation and career.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-hungary-president-idUSBRE8310AX20120402\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">president of Hungary, Pal Schmitt, also had to step down<\/a>\u00a0after discovering himself in the middle of the plagiarism scandal. Though his resignation had little to no effect on Hungary, as the country is a parliamentary republic, Schmitt\u2019s political career was buried. Also, Budapest\u2019s Semmelweis University revoked his 1992 doctorate.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In 2016,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/education\/universities-crack-down-on-cheating-students-20160421-gobq1m.html#ixzz476Cu2ppr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">three major Australian universities<\/a>\u00a0<strong>expelled 2 students, imposed severe penalties on 70 students, revoked 4 degrees,<\/strong>\u00a0and revised their assessment policies to secure honest\u00a0academic performance. This happened after around 1,000 students from 16 universities hired ghostwriters to complete their assignments.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Cheating was also revealed at Harvard<\/strong>, despite its reputation as one of the top USA colleges. Around\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/17\/education\/students-accused-of-cheating-return-awkwardly-to-a-changed-harvard.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">70 students had to withdraw<\/a>\u00a0out of 125 suspected. Some of them enrolled back after a pause in their\u00a0academic progress. Moreover, in 2024, the academic community was stirred by Claudine Gay\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2024\/jan\/06\/harvard-claudine-gay-plagiarism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resignation<\/a>\u00a0as Harvard President due to the plagiarism allegations dating back to 1993.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Each of these cases stirred the academic community with its negative effects. We don\u2019t know how many of those remain unnoticed.
