An algorithm differentiates similarity found in quotes, references, body of the paper, and reflects them in corresponding sections:

Body of the paper

Quotes

References

All these parts are visualized separately, so that a user may decide either to include or exclude them from the calculated similarity score.

Quotes are considered to be parts of the text that are taken into quotation marks.

References are considered to be match found in the list of used sources.

Example: Austen remarks, “Miss Lodge has only 800£ of her own, & it is not supposed that her Father can give her much, therefore the good offices of the Neighbourhood will be highly acceptable”

Generally, quotes and references are excluded from the overall similarity score.

Example: Austen, Jane. Mansfield Park. Edited by Kathryn Sutherland, Penguin Books, 2014.

The report highlights phrases that match outside resources. For each instance of match user is given a direct link to the source of where information has been taken from. In case there is more than one source, system will show all resources that have similar content .

In the report, there are two ways on how to access the original sources:

By following a “sign” and opening an original resource with a highlighted text that has been detected as a match

By following a “link” and opening an original resource

The overall percentage is calculated based on sections user selects to include in the report. By default it includes only similarity found in the body of the paper and excludes quotes and references.

A report can be downloaded in PDF format at any time.

Goal of the report is to quickly assess originality of the content of the paper. Further decision on how to act on an information given in the report is a prerogative of the user.
